Tax season is here and among us! Did you know that downtown Las Cruces is considered part of a Tax Increment Development District? Commonly referred to as a TIDD, the Tax Incremental Development District is a mechanism to support economic development and job creation by creating gross receipts tax financing for infrastructure through contributors like the City of Las Cruces and Doña Ana County.
A Chance to Revitalize
Since the beginning years of the city in 1849, downtown Las Cruces has been the heart of the city. It serves as a home for many artists, historic buildings and neighborhoods, and is a central hub for culture and community. Efforts to help revitalize and continue to the cultural impact of downtown Las Cruces have increased in recent years due to the City’s Tax Incremental Development District (TIDD) plan. The TIDD allows for downtown to gain frequent capital and economic improvements.
Making a Space for the Community
First established in 2008, the TIDD plan contains several phases to revitalize the downtown area. The creation of the Plaza de Las Cruces was able to come to fruition as a result of these funds. The Plaza serves as a meeting space for public events, festivals, and more. The TIDD has also provided opportunities for better parking downtown through the Downtown Street redesign and updates to parking lots. Other projects include the restoration of historic buildings and the opening of new businesses in the area, creating more jobs in the downtown area.
